Northern Nevada Legal Aid (NNLA), a non-profit, public interest law firm is seeking a Legal Assistant (Part-Time 20 hours a week) for our Children’s Advocacy Project (CAP) department. We are dedicated to providing experienced and diverse legal services to protect the essential needs of Northern Nevadans with a goal of legal empowerment for our community.

The CAP department provides legal representation to abused and neglected children in the Judicial Districts in the State of Nevada. CAP provides counsel, advice and representation to abused and neglected children in the foster care system. The attorneys serve as the child’s voice before the court and community allowing the child to take an active role (and responsibility) in their own destiny.

The Legal Assistant will provide clerical and administrative support to the CAP attorney located in our Yerington, Nevada office.

Job duties will include the following:

• Process new clients and court referrals by entering them into WLS’ case management system, from intake screening, running conflict checks, and processing through all phases of litigation

• Schedule and calendar appointments, meetings, court dates, and manage attorney calendars

• Interact with clients, the courts, opposing counsel, and others through telephone, email and in person

• Become familiar with resources and community services that meet the needs of the clients and maintain that familiarity as services evolve

• Assist staff when needed

Excellent writing and communication skills are a must. Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and case management software. Basic office skills such as copying, answering phones, and filing are required. Experience as a legal secretary, legal assistant, or paralegal preferred but not required. Training will be provided. Occasional travel to our Reno office is required.

Salary up to $21.00 an hour depending on experience and qualifications. WLS offers a generous PTO accrual program that starts accruing immediately to earn 5 hours of PTO a pay period (increase in PTO accrual after 2 years) to help promote excellent work-life balance.
