Job Title: Comptroller

Northern Nevada Legal Aid (NNLA), formerly known as Washoe Legal Services, is a distinguished 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1965. We are committed to providing access to justice for Northern Nevada’s most vulnerable populations, advocating for their rights, safety, and family stability. NNLA plays a vital role in supporting domestic violence victims, abused and neglected children, the indigent, the elderly, and immigrants facing crime and violence. In 2021, NNLA assisted in over 8,820 legal matters, including immigration cases for victims of crime and other humanitarian benefits. Our Immigration Unit is recognized under the Department of Justice’s Recognition and Accreditation Program.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary: $80-100K Negotiable based on experience.

Job Summary:

The Comptroller will plan and direct the accounting operations of the organization.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the operations of the Accounting Department, which include accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
  • Oversees training programs and identifies training needs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a documented system of accounting policies and procedures; implements a system of controls over accounting transactions to minimize risk.
  • Oversees the production of periodic financial reports; ensures that the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or international financial reporting standards.
  • Recommends benchmarks that will be used to measure the organization’s performance.
  • Produces the annual budget and forecasts; reports significant budget differences to management.
  • Provides financial analysis, with emphasis on capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Works with external auditors and provides needed information for the annual audit.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal government requirements, including grant and other funding sources.
  • Assists departments with maximizing funds received under various grants, contracts, and other funding sources, including projections and performance with respect to same.
  • Periodic review, analysis, and negotiation of contracts related to funding and financial sources, advises senior management and executive team on same.
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.
  • Ten years or more of related experience required.
  • Nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation preferred.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Able to travel as needed.
